The description of the book is why I wanted to read it。 However, this is not unputdownable and it is not a thriller。 It is an easy read, so that I appreciated。 There are so many story lines happening in this book, and the biggest one doesn’t even come up and get semi-exciting until the last 50 pages of the book! It's always a gamble for me to go into an established series without having read any of the previous books。 Normally, I try to avoid it altogether。 However, when I read the plot for this one, I just had to give it a go。While I certainly would have enjoyed the book a lot more with previous knowledge of the characters and past plot lines, this wasn't the most difficult one I've ever jumped into mid-series。 It helped to know what I was going into。 Sometimes I don't realize I'm picking up a part of It's always a gamble for me to go into an established series without having read any of the previous books。 Normally, I try to avoid it altogether。 However, when I read the plot for this one, I just had to give it a go。While I certainly would have enjoyed the book a lot more with previous knowledge of the characters and past plot lines, this wasn't the most difficult one I've ever jumped into mid-series。 It helped to know what I was going into。 Sometimes I don't realize I'm picking up a part of a series and I spend the entire time frustrated with myself。 That being said, I recommend reading from the beginning to avoid any plot holes。 From reading other reviews, it sounds like one of the two main plots of this book is a continuation of the previous book in the series。 What I enjoyed most was the Royalty Protection Command, namely Princess Diana's involvement in the story。 Hearing in the author's note that Jeffrey Archer had actually met her made it all the more special。 I also loved Artemisia。 So cute! The book ends on a cliffhanger, which also makes me wonder about the book before this one。 I may have to go back and read the others and revisit this one with more clarity because I would like to know what happens next!A huge thanks to HarperCollins/Harper360 for sending me a free ARC to read and review! Ok so please don't shoot me but this is my first Jeffrey Archer novel!! Being the fifth in the series, Next in Line has its major characters already established and I had a little difficulty figuring out who is what due to my late entry with this one。 There are several subplots continuing from the previous books and reading them in proper order would greatly enhance the fun, in my opinion。 Archer brings together his knowledge of the British royalty, his research into the novel’s period and setting, and his flair for spinning a fine yarn to entertain the reader from start to finish。 Warwick comes across as a gentleman cop and a consummate family man whereas Ross Hogan is apparently more colourful—though he doesn’t have much scope to show those colours in this outing。 Other members of Warwick’s team are also distinctive, and perform their significant parts with distinction, making one question naming this series after Warwick alone。Compared to the sharp, brutal thrillers that abound the literary market these days, Archer’s writing feels charmingly dated as he takes his time building the story with many seemingly superfluous asides。 Unlike some of his previous works where the characters were either good or bad, this series has a few grey characters, which is a welcome change。 Next in Line is a fine addition to the William Warwick series and my suggestion to fellow readers would be to read the previous four books before getting to it, for maximum enjoyment!I’m grateful to HarperCollins UK for the advance copy of Next in Line through NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review。 。。。more

I don't know how many books Jeffrey Archer has written but I have enjoyed the ones that I've read - and this one is no exception。 In typical Archer fashion, the mystery brings together many unexpected elements- the world or art and museums, the Royal Family (well, Princess DI), Scotland Yard, Libyan terrorists- and the author weaves them together in an exciting story。 As always, Archer uses complicated themes and unexpected twists (that I couldn't guess), to complete this action packed story。 wi I don't know how many books Jeffrey Archer has written but I have enjoyed the ones that I've read - and this one is no exception。 In typical Archer fashion, the mystery brings together many unexpected elements- the world or art and museums, the Royal Family (well, Princess DI), Scotland Yard, Libyan terrorists- and the author weaves them together in an exciting story。 As always, Archer uses complicated themes and unexpected twists (that I couldn't guess), to complete this action packed story。 with a lot of cunning, deceit, and double crossing。 I did have to make a list of characters - especially the Scotland Yard personnel and their positions。 The characters nevertheless were personified as authentic people with everyday issues and joys。 Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins for an ARC to read。 I am leaving this review voluntarily。 。。。more

I am not going to hide that fact that I am a big fan of Jeffery Archer's books, but while this book is good it isn't one of the best。We follow Detective Warwick for the fifth time as he does battle with the fiendish art thief, Miles Faulkner。 Following straight on from the last book, we join Warwick having captured Faulkner and returned him to prison using potentially not entirely legal means。 Faulkner's lawyer, Booth Watson QC, is only to happy to see his client back in prison as he has plans t I am not going to hide that fact that I am a big fan of Jeffery Archer's books, but while this book is good it isn't one of the best。We follow Detective Warwick for the fifth time as he does battle with the fiendish art thief, Miles Faulkner。 Following straight on from the last book, we join Warwick having captured Faulkner and returned him to prison using potentially not entirely legal means。 Faulkner's lawyer, Booth Watson QC, is only to happy to see his client back in prison as he has plans to steal both Faulkner's art collection and his millions。 The bulk of the story covers all of this。Running along side this thread is an investigation into Royal Protection, who HQ have reason to believe are ripping off the tax payer。 Warwick and his crew are despatched to Buckingham Palace to try and complete an investigation into exactly what is going on。 Warwick's colleague, Hogan, has become Princess Diana's bodyguard too so is watching the action from the inside。 The investigation centres around DS Milner and how many expenses , air miles and wages he is claiming。 This part of the story starts slowly but is wrapped up really quickly (about 3 pages)。 In a third strand, we have a Libyan terrorist landing at Heathrow to refuel his private jet and Warwick and his team having to arrest him on the tarmac。 Carted off to the same prison as Faulkner, who soon sees a way to get early release by mining him for information, the terrorist plans two terror attacks - the first one being thwarted in fairly unspectacular fashion。 The second plan is more successful, and involved the hostage taking of Princess Diana and her Lady in waiting, Victoria, during a clandestine holiday with Diana's boyfriend。 This plot strand is introduced at the 85% mark, and very disappointingly, was over in a matter of a handful of pages, I couldn't help but think that the book should have been based around this idea。Archer is a good story teller, and the book is readable and enjoyable, but I was frustrated by the pacing and how the most interesting plot strand was introduced and completed so late in the book that it felt like an after thought, and this left me feeling slightly disappointed。 Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

This is the fifth book in the William Warwick series by master storyteller Jeffrey Archer。 This series is a little different to other crime series in that it is more a story of the life and times of Detective William Warwick than an out and out crime series。The scene is London, 1988 and the British nation is in love with Princess Diana and the Royal Family which means that Scotland Yard is under even more pressure to protect them。 A Royal protection command is entrusted with this responsibility This is the fifth book in the William Warwick series by master storyteller Jeffrey Archer。 This series is a little different to other crime series in that it is more a story of the life and times of Detective William Warwick than an out and out crime series。The scene is London, 1988 and the British nation is in love with Princess Diana and the Royal Family which means that Scotland Yard is under even more pressure to protect them。 A Royal protection command is entrusted with this responsibility and Detective Chief Inspector William Warwick and his Scotland Yard squad are sent in to investigate the team when there are signs of corruption。I have read the series from the start and found it a very enjoyable series written in the authors unique style。 Great characters throughout and wonderful storytelling。 I didn’t think this one was quite as good as previous ones but the author has set the bar so high。I would like to thank both Netgalley and Harper Collins for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

This wasn’t my favourite I found keeping up with all the characters was hard work maybe if I’d read all the previous books it would have been easier it was very well written as always I just wish he would write a book on its own not in a series I use to love those。Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC

I have no idea why but I’ve always avoided Jeffrey Archer’s books。 Having whipped through this book (absolutely unputdownable) I’m off to buy up the rest on the series。 Fabulous book, great storylines, no need to have read the previous books on the series…although if you’re like me you’ll want to now!Thank you to Netgalley the author and publishers for an ARC in exchange for all honesty review

This was an enjoyable, easy read。。。 also my first Jeffrey Archer experience。 Despite this, I don't feel like I was missing crucial information as the narrator did an excellent job of updating the reader and reminding them of past events。The good guys were clearly good and the bad guys were very bad。 Miles Faulkner, I see as a more nuanced villain, though and in the end, I found myself rooting for him。 Christina was similar to Miles and despite some redeeming qualities shown at the end, I could n This was an enjoyable, easy read。。。 also my first Jeffrey Archer experience。 Despite this, I don't feel like I was missing crucial information as the narrator did an excellent job of updating the reader and reminding them of past events。The good guys were clearly good and the bad guys were very bad。 Miles Faulkner, I see as a more nuanced villain, though and in the end, I found myself rooting for him。 Christina was similar to Miles and despite some redeeming qualities shown at the end, I could not find it in me to trust her。 At least with Miles, I knew he was bad。I love the relationships between characters (father and son, between colleagues, and my absolute favourite being William and Beth) and I feel that throughout the series, there was quite a bit of character development。。。 more than expected for the genre。The slight negative while reading the eBook was the sudden point of view change, mid-chapter, with no clear delimitation。 It didn't impact my enjoyment, but it did affect the flow。A great book touching on very important current issues: love, honesty, faithfulness, parenting, gender equality, greed, corruption, racism, extremism and many more。 I will have to read the entire series。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed Next in Line by Jeffrey Archer, the fifth instalment of the William Warwick series and the ongoing cat and mouse game between William Warwick and Miles Faulkner。 I loved the multiple threads of the story and the way story moved between them all in each chapter, making the book very pacy。 When I started reading the book, I ended up reading to 3am because I just had to know what happened next!
